River - The Interview Scene

Image
The first scene that we filmed was the interview scene. This was a lot of fun to film. We brought John up to Rathmore to film with our Media Studies teacher Mr. Tierney, who acted as our interviewer. We wanted this scene to feel uncomfortable and have a bit of a sinister tone from the interviewer. His gruff voice really helped add to this feeling, and the claustrophobic room exaggerated Ron's obvious nervousness. There were some posters up around the room that we took shots of to set the scene; we wanted it to feel corporate, despite the somewhat abstract concept of interviewing for a job in the afterlife.  The test footage really helped us in filming this scene; we knew exactly what we needed to do, so we were able to film this scene in half an hour. We actually got a lot of footage for this so there is a chance that a lot of it won't be included in the final film. We also added a bit of comic relief with Ron's tie. It's obvious that he doesn't really know or ...

River - Test Footage 3

This test footage was good to give us an opportunity to test external audio and sync it up properly. However, it was good to practice and now we know exactly how to film this scene. The external audio works well; it's better than the audio that is captured by the phone. The audio is much more clean and provides a better overall quality to the film.

River - Test Footage 2

For the second batch of test footage, we first tried the focus pull again with a DSLR. This was good, but there was a noticeable zoom on the image and we didn't want that in the film. So, in the end, I think we are going to stick with just using the phone camera. The second shot we tried was the tracking shot for the messenger scene. This worked well, and we also managed to make the audio sync up quite well to get a smooth transition. The tripod really aided us in getting a steady shot here. However, we most likely will not be using the DSLR as it doesn't make sense to carry another camera for one shot. We also have a phone mount for tripods so we can get the same smooth shot.

River - Test Footage

This is the test footage that we created for our film. We wanted to test a number of shots to see if they were doable. The first shot that we tested was 'the fall that doesn't hurt'. The main thing we wanted to test in this shot was whether it would actually look good, or whether it would look obviously faked. I think that it actually looked good in this and would be suitable to be used in our final film. The next shot we tried was Kevin looking back at his dead body. Really what we were testing here was whether it was actually feasible, given that we had no double for Kevin. Again, I think this worked well. Despite the continuity errors in this test footage, I think that this shot looked good. The next thing we tried was the focus pull. This took several attempts, as we tried using different methods. The first one we tried was with my Pixel 2 phone camera, with some more blur added in post-production. This worked well, however the next shot with the proper camera l...

River - Treatment

RIVER Genre:  Dark comedy, fantasy Duration:  5 - 10 minutes Target audience:  Anyone over 12 Outline:  A man dies from alcohol poisoning, collapsing onto the side of the road. The fabled ferry man comes to 'collect' him, who takes him 'through the river' to the afterlife. It is seemingly a form of purgatory, as the ferry man takes him to different parts of his life, and to see different people who mean something to him. Yet the world also seems to have a society in itself, with the ferry man doing this as his job, and other ferry men working at the time. As his journey through memories comes to an end, the ferry man must send him up or down... Character breakdown:  Ferry Man/Ron (John Campbell):  One of the ferry men. Seemingly used to be a plucky, enthusiastic man, has now been de-emotionalised by his monotonous regime and is cynical about it's repetitive nature. He sees  Kevin  as unknowing, which irritates him as h...

Cinematography Inspiration - Hideo Kojima

Image
One of the people I have taken inspiration from in terms of cinematography is Hideo Kojima. This may seem trivial, given that Kojima makes games and therefore there is little to show his real world cinematography. However, I think that this is irrelevant and that directing is directing no matter what platform it is on.  Hideo Kojima has been heavily involved in the creation of the Metal Gear Solid series, as well as starting his own studio for the creation of his latest game, Death Stranding, which is yet to be released. Particularly as the technology for the creation of these games advanced, Kojima was able to have more creative freedom and his style permeates throughout the games. To this end, he has blended the world of film into the world of video games seamlessly, creating beautiful and emotional moments through an intelligent and well thought out use of cinematography. In particular, Kojima uses a lot of one-shot takes, as is seen in the scene below. This is a cutscene ta...

River - Foley/SFX List

I looked through the script and compiled a list of the sound effects and folly that needs to be recorded for our film. I have been tasked with creating these sounds, or finding better ones that are publicly available if I can't record them. These are the sounds that I have determined that we will need to put in our film: Walking Kettle boiling Paper folding/unfolding Printing Fabric noises Lamp buzzing noise Atmospheric noises, birds/etc High frequency tone Door opening and closing sounds Running footsteps for messenger Most of these sounds I can create myself, apart from the lamp buzzing noise, atmospheric sounds and the high frequency tone. Anything else that I find I can't create can still be gotten online if necessary.
