River - Test Footage 2



For the second batch of test footage, we first tried the focus pull again with a DSLR. This was good, but there was a noticeable zoom on the image and we didn't want that in the film. So, in the end, I think we are going to stick with just using the phone camera.

 The second shot we tried was the tracking shot for the messenger scene. This worked well, and we also managed to make the audio sync up quite well to get a smooth transition. The tripod really aided us in getting a steady shot here. However, we most likely will not be using the DSLR as it doesn't make sense to carry another camera for one shot. We also have a phone mount for tripods so we can get the same smooth shot.

Conventions of Short Films - Structure/Setting/Theme

While there are many short films out there that aim to portray a plethora of different themes, there are some conventions which generally these films adhere to, with a few edge case exceptions. As well as this, the structure and setting of short films are usually quite similar, due to the time and budget constraints that tend to affect short films. Once we scratch the surface of these films, we can determine a distinct set of conventions that most short films follow. Firstly, I am going to look at themes. There are so many themes that can be used in a short film. It may seem impossible to drill this area down into a convention or conventions. However when looking closer, we can see that a lot of films tend to use societal issues (racism, sexism, ableism, etc.) as a basis for the story.
